Finely handcrafted in a sand, sandstone finish. The design draws on a Roman marble pilaster with acanthus scrolls (first half of the 1st century A.D.) at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, decorated with architectural acanthus scrolls and a variety of birds and presumably from a public building. Similar carvings are found on major imperial monuments in Rome, on funerary altars, and on smaller objects such as Arretine pottery and silver drinking bowls.
