Details
Antique gold finish with sentier cream upholstery; neoclassical design with intricate carvings and a rectilinear frame. Historic provenance: a faithful reproduction of an ornate and formal straight-backed armchair (1788) crafted by Georges Jacob (French, 1739 to 1814), one of France's most successful chair-makers of the 18th century. The Met's chair belongs to a larger set of furniture described in the 1789 inventory of the Chateau de Saint Cloud on the outskirts of Paris, commissioned for the gaming room of Louis XVI, known as the Salon des Jeux, and detailed by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
