The design reimagines a 10th to 11th century relief from the vicinity of Salerno, Italy, where it is said to have been built into the masonry of a church. It features a fantastical bird with a griffin like head amid foliage, reflecting the artistic fusion of Islamic, Sasanian, Byzantine, and Southern Italian design influences. The original marble relief is in The Met collection.
