Vintage Brass Hurricane Vitruvian
Vitruvian scrolls and laurel leaf swags run across this vintage brass hurricane, whose clear glass shade guards a candle flame from unruly drafts.
Details
Vintage brass finish with clear glass; Vitruvian scrolls and laurel leaf swags drawn from Neoclassical design of the Louis XVI era; the glass shade protects the flame from drafts. Historic provenance: inspired by a French candlestand (ca. 1770), or flambeau de jardin, with a shade at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. One of a pair, the original is crafted from gilt bronze and bears a glass shade for practical protection from drafts. The Vitruvian scroll is an architectural wave pattern and the laurel leaf swag is a type of garland, both popular during the period of Louis XVI.
